My highlights from Milan Fashion Week

by Vicky Thoma

Italian style is sharp and sensual. As Paris Fashion Week begins, here are some of my highlights from Milan Fashion Week. The Dolce & Gabbana AW10 collection paid homage to the duo’s Sicilian roots. The collection was mostly about structure – think a suit over a slinky negligee. Sharp tailored jackets hung softly to show off a strong illusion of femininity.  As it wouldn’t be Dolce Gabbana without a few splashes of animal prints, there were a few cocktail dresses with bold leopard prints and velvet was used for draped dresses. The emphasis of the collection was their signature refined tailoring, made feminine by lace, corsets in satin and knits draped over.

Roberto Cavalli AW10 did boho with lots of layers in light fabrics and fur. Layers consisted of blurred animal prints, light chiffon, fur and brocade coats. The colour palette was a mixture of blood-red, black embellished with gold and dusty grey. There were harem style trousers for volume, flounce multi-layered maxi dresses and coats with fur applique.

At Gucci AW10, fitted or body conscious dresses featured heavily in a muted colour palette of brown, beige, dove grey and python prints as did leather. Cashmere coats and box jackets for outerwear, low slung silk trousers and blouses. Ostrich featured as feather patchwork, embellishments and on a leather jacket as suede thigh boots skipped hemlines to become the order of the day.

Hotels have become a chic accessory as Moschino Cheap & Chic’s AW10 collection would have us believe. Maison Moschino was the venue for the show-the new hotel belongs to the company and the inspiration for their latest collection. Influenced by the kind of guests that are likely to be walking the lobby of the hotel, from the shopaholic to the red carpet celeb, even a maid was featured. The collection was juxtaposed with spring colours and winter fabrics. The distinctive comic styling of Moschino gave bright floral prints mixed with colourful checked tweed and block coloured wool. Palette featured baby blue, rose and fuchsia pink, green, purple, black and white. Signature slogan t-shirts of Moschino were on show, one in particular stating “Fashion Must Go On”(above pic), perhaps a reference to the recent death of Alexander McQueen. All in all, it was a very fun poke at winter fashion.
