Laser LED dresses, this was not but Hussein Chalayan’s Autumn Winter 10 collection is on a road trip through America. Stepping away from previous avant-garde architectural garments which his name has become synonymous with, and taking on the minimalistic trend of the season,Chalayan shows us how to travel in style. Kicking off this journey from New York were long over-sized herringbone coats that looked like an exaggeration of the boyfriend blazer en route an unspecified destination in scruffy sneakers. Double breasted coats had deep plunging V-neck; one coat was so long past calf-length while others merely skimmed the thighs.
Sporting Amish-inspired bonnets worn over simple black shift dresses with sheer long sleeves and finished cuffs, the journey continued past Pennsylvania and southbound into hurricane territory clearly illustrated by a pleated wrapped-around-the-body dress that even went up and beyond, completely covering the face. Regardless of the storyline, there were many wearable items as red ruffles decorated dresses, jumpers and trousers in merino wool.A leather jacket had the red crocheted ruffles wrapped around the sleeves and there were leather shorts to match. There were oversized leather and shearling coats, not to mention a spot on trend for AW10- a spectacular camel cape, also with matching binoculars.
Finishing off at a glamorous destination, models emerged in sharp tailoring, one in a cowl neck sheer white shirt and wide leg trousers. Mini-crystals adorned plunging v-neck column dresses with thigh high slits. Ankle socks and brogues were worn almost throughout. Still in his visual elements, another interpretation of this cross-country trip, is that oversized coats and boyish silhouettes could take you from day casual to-night glamour without trying too hard.
