Fur Fury at Gaultier|PFW

by Vicky Thoma

Before the Jean Paul Gaultier show started Twitter users inside the show had alerted eager fashionistas that PETA activists were outside of the venue, protesting against Gaultier’s use of fur. This did nothing to douse the global melting pot at Gaultier’s AW10 show. It seemed the catwalk had been invaded by a diverse selection of models in mismatched folk clothing from various parts of different continents and each one told a story that was different from the last.A confusing story perhaps, as we saw impeccable tailoring set against a back drop and mix-up of Scandinavian embroidery, far Eastern silks, Persian slippers, Peruvian hats and African scarves. Classic pieces were revamped with tribal edits and head-wear.

One model stepped out in an African-print turban worn under a slouchy hooded fur coat, while another wore a floor-length trench coat cut off at mid-thigh to reveal neon-green tights worn under red tennis socks and red platforms, finished off with a babushka. Trousers were tapered at peg leg and there were a variety of checked harems to choose from. Skirts were full with folk embroidered panels and ruffles, layered with heavy wool  jumpers .The use of neon-coloured tights was catchy, it was like watching the world go by in different colours. At a level that would further infuriate the already enraged PETA , mink and fox hats was adorned throughout as were beaded, tasselled or embroidered scarves. However, there were many wearable pieces thrown in the form of a playsuit, a cropped fur coat, harem pants, a leather motorcycle jacket, a long silk dress and of course, the trench coats which came in various expertly tailored lengths.
