Drama and Dresses at the Oscars

“Now if fashion was porn, then this dress is the money shot”-perhaps a taste of the drama ahead, Gabourey Sidibe’s naive comment gave us an insight as to how she perceives herself on and off the red carpet. Another deluded red carpet victim was Mariah Carey in  a Valentino dress- lovely dress, wrong owner.Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Dries Van Noten print dress was one of the many questionable choices that attended the Oscars last night. The print dress seemed to work in contrast to the many sleeveless bustier gowns hovering around but just not on her. Zoe Saldana also put questions in my head. She wore a Givenchy Haute Couture dress by Riccardo Tisci. I really liked Zoe’s dress on the catwalk and it should have stayed there. Then there was Charlize Theron, who always manages to look stunning no matter what so my expectations were shattered in this Christian Dior dress as my eyes were constantly drawn to her bust region – just not right. And whilst still on the subject of questionable choices, there is a rumour that Tina Fey finds it really difficult to deal with her regular appearances on the worst dressed list, so my guess is that she will not be taking this one well either, her choice of Michael Kors was well…poor Tina!

But it was not all doom and gloom as there were some worthy winners- Cameron Diaz dazzled in Armani Privé and the carpet seemed to have been invaded by an army of Armani Privé-ites. Amanda Seyfried and Jennifer Lopez were forefront on the march in incredibly similar dresses – one can only imagine the horror on their faces when they realized their red carpet faux pas. Diane Kruger looked amazing in a nude Chanel dress. Others sporting nude coloured dresses included Miley Cyrus (and her mum whose back was covered in tattoos-seriously?) in Jenny Packham and Demi Moore in Atelier Versace. Sandra Bullock has been doing quite well on the red carpet lately and last night she was a winner in a tinfoil Marchesa dress. Another Marchesa seen was on Vera Farmiga who looked crimsoned, especially on the lips. Rachel McAdams looked stunning in Ellie Saab and so was Penelope Cruz in Donna Karan Couture. As always Helen Mirren looked graceful in Badgley Mishka and Kate Winslet made a bit more effort this time in Yves Saint Lauren. Victoria Beckham looked predictable in her own designs and Carey Mulligan looked great in a Prada dress which had mini scissors and forks embellishment.

At the risk of getting stoned at by fashion critics, given the mixed reaction this outfit got, i have to say my winner for best dressed last night went to Sarah Jessica Parker. I like her fashion forward take on the red carpet and she looked ravishing in this Chanel Haute Couture dress; a bespoke pressie from Karl Lagerfeld. Critics fault this dress in many ways but i think if anyone should be allowed to get away with it, it must be SJP.I am especially drawn to the simple yet effective draping at the back of the dress. If you think she deserves credit(or not) for this outfit, then let me know. Who was your best dressed at the Golden Globes. View and vote for your best dressed at the Oscars 2010 awards.
