It’s good to know that the Balmain AW 10 collection still comes with some of our favourites, like those plunging neckline and high riding hemlines but this time in metallic gold or brocade. Everything as you know it, was shown; strong pointy shoulders that have followed through for a couple of seasons now, on velvet brocade jackets and sequin dresses. Pantsuits were leather, sequined and wet look. Royal colours were used, reminiscent of the opulence of Versailles, with lots of purple and gold. The emphasis here was on detail, as gold fringing and chain trimmings updated jackets and short skin-tight dresses. Sheer pussy bow blouses completed the sun king look, which was awash with lamé, brocade and sequins.
The collection has received a mixed review; Balmain designer-Christophe Decarnin has been accused of using over the top designs to pull the house out of decline (oddly enough, Balmain also do a range of hair products!). This collection is certainly not out of contest with Decarnin’s previous rock inspired collections, and the luxury attached to the house means more bank breaking price tags to come. Be prepared to see celebrities trip over themselves to get into the various short black paillette or fitted lamé dresses from this collection.
