Balenciaga pushes it|PFW

If you are missing some of your domestic items, say your foil, bubble wrap or magazine? They might just have ended up in Nicolas Ghesquière’s AW10 Balenciaga Collection. Thursday morning in Paris, with Anna Wintour sitting front row, the designer used advanced production and technology to establish something more of a sci-fi collection rather than a minimalistic approach to his latest designs. Using contrasting luxury fabrics such as perforated cashmere and silk with domestic materials such as vinyl, polystyrene and nylon, it was like a movie based on a futuristic chic woman in Paris.

Ghesquière is a visionary, and the show was more of a collection of units rather than garments. The look was unnatural as stiff-rounded silhouette was set off with geometric patterns offset against primary colours. Metallic quilted jackets with sleeping bag zips were worn back to front and triangular tops with cropped cape shoulders created from fragments of magazine headlines, were worn over salopette-looking trousers . The shoes of course, were the real show stopper; blocked heels with a cubist effect in eye-catching colours. The clothes featured an assortment of texture which transcended into modern art and somehow, it worked. Those triangular magazine print tops are sure to cascade down to the high street, let’s just hope we remember to pay homage to Ghesquière when it does.
