It looks like Rihanna’s stylist must have Viktor and Rolf on speed dial – the singer has twice this month been spotted in creations by the Dutch designers. Attending the Pre-Grammy’s Gala in Beverly Hill’s last weekend, Rihanna stood out like a pastel bird of paradise in a dress from the Spring 2010 collection which comprised of a black bodice and layers of asymmetrical jutting tulle in jade and pale pink.
It’s been interesting to watch Rihanna’s sartorial choices in the last year. It was after the same Pre-Grammys event in 2009 that she was attacked by then boyfriend Chris Brown, and ever since it’s seemed that Rihanna’s style has aimed to reflect her new-found don’t-mess-with-me attitude. Spikes, studs, sharp angles and the fiercest of silhouettes have characterised her looks of late; perhaps 2010 will see her return to a more feminine aesthetic. This tutu-esque dress is certainly a fantastic mix of frilly prettiness with a dose of the outlandish – that top ruffle cannot be good for ones peripheral vision.
Rihanna’s second selection from Viktor and Rolf’s Spring 2010 collection was seen when she performed on Oprah earlier this month. Like a re-engineered tuxedo, this black and white dress also combines frills and frivolity, by subtracting a sleeve and adding oodles of black ruffles.
